Opportunities for home-based employment and financial gain through self-employment abound on the Internet. Each day, many thousands of Internet entrepreneurs just like you sell their products or services, or promote those of others, to many millions of on-line buyers all over the world. A well-planned and properly maintained Web site is probably the single most effective way to reach a large audience of qualified buyers.

This should not, however, be construed to mean that just because you’ve already established, or are about to establish, an Internet presence you will automatically become wealthy. As with any successful business, you’ll have to expend the time, effort and money needed to create a profitable enterprise.

Contrary to what many so-called Internet business "experts" preach, unless you have a ton of money to spend on design, content and promotion for your Web site, it could take two or three months, perhaps much longer, before your site begins to realize significant amounts of Internet traffic. Without the traffic, you’ll have no business.

Of course, it’s going to take lots of hard work to grow your on-line business. You simply can’t cobble together a Web site, park it on a domain host’s server, then go away and forget about it. Your Internet business, in order to succeed, will demand your frequent attention.

That’s the bad news. The good news is the forecast for the Internet’s future, as a business venue, looks bright. Huge numbers of people go on-line for the first time, every day, and many current users are upgrading to high-speed connections. As a result, Internet traffic is expected to double every year over the next five years (through 2007).

This explosive growth represents enormous potential for increasing on-line sales, regardless of the merchandise being sold. To be fair, though, we should stipulate that this explosive growth also poses the threat of increased competition. The longer you wait to get your Internet business started, the more difficulty you’ll have in getting it started and making it profitable.

Why should you start an on-line business? If security means anything to you, it just may be, for a number of reasons, the only way you’ll be able to guarantee yourself a steady, dependable income for the future.
